Ever had an Apple Banana? Today, we are harvesting some Apple Bananas. If you have never had Hawaii’s Apple Bananas, then you need to come over to Kualoa Ranch and try some of the best Hawaii has to offer. Apple Bananas are sweeter than your average banana. Although short in length, Apple bananas are fatter and chunkier than other small varieties and it’s flavor, once ripe, displays hints of apple and strawberry. They can be enjoyed fresh, baked, pureed, even fried. Apple bananas contain a significant amount of potassium and fiber and are higher in vitamins C and A than traditional bananas. Keep at room temperature until ready to use, to ripen place in a plastic or paper bag overnight.
These are a dwarf Brazilian variety which were propagated by the University of Hawaii at Manoa. FYI, bananas are not a tree, but they are a large herb with edible fruits. Bananas successively produces fruit indefinately without discrimination to seasons.
We have been planting Bananas over the past 7 months. We currently have over 75 banana plants in the ground on the Moli`i side of Kualoa Ranch, within the Hakipu`u ahupua`a. We have picked up another 200+ young banana plants within the last few weeks, which will be planted out in the field in about 2 months. They are currently hardening off in our shadehouse, located in Ka`a`awa. Our first bananas that were planted are currently producing fruit and will be available at our Visitor Center. So come out and try some of the best bananas Hawaii has to offer and enjoy seeing our bananas growing on our farm and garden tour.
