Malama Experience at Kualoa Ranch

Mālama Experience

This hands-on experience captures the importance of sustainability and watershed management. It is important for us to mālama these resources as they feed our entire natural environment from the mountain to the sea, which in turn feeds us as beneficiaries of this thriving ecosystem. Learn about how important kalo (taro) is to the Hawaiian people not only for sustenance and its cultural tie to Kualoa, but also through Hawaiian cultural identity. Depending on need, activities can include thatching of traditional Hawaiian hale (houses) … assisting with cleaning, planting, harvesting kalo  … or stewardship of the māla lāʻau lapaʻau (Hawaiian medicinal plant garden).  Appropriate beach wear is needed and guests should bring a towel as they will be able to rinse off in the ocean or in one of the streams.

  • While on O’ahu, we actually went to Kualoa-Ranch twice, once for the Malama Aina (Care for the Land) and again for the 2hr UTV tour. My family absolutely loved the Malama Aina experience with Iwi. She was very informative and tons of fun. For our experience, we helped collect rocks for a rock wall that will be used for the fishing pond. When my family decided to come to Hawai’i we knew wanted to learn about true Hawai’ian culture and give back instead of just taking from the island and people and this tour allowed us to do that. I’m forever grateful for this experience. You’ll find about true Hawai’i especially with Iwi! The UTV tour was a ton of fun and our guides Taeil and Taimane were very personable and great photographers. They got all the good shots I liked the fact that the tour was unscripted allowing the guides to give us not only information about movie sets but about Hawai’ian history and culture in general. I learned a lot from them as well. This tour is highly recommended.

  • I highly recommend the Malama Aina ( care for the land) tour at Kuoloa Ranch and our amazing tour guide, Iwi. We wanted to give back in some way while we visited Hawaii. The Malama Aina tour was perfect. It was remarkable, beautiful, and inspiring. Many wonderful unexpected little surprises. Our guide Iwi lovingly tends to her area of the land and her care for the land left a mark on us. After she showed us some of the property and shared some fascinating Hawaiian traditions and history, she led our group to help clear a stream of some non-native plants. It was a small gesture, but we really appreciated being a part of a restoration project. We might even do this again before we go home. It was so fun! I highly recommend making time during your visit for this memorable experience.

  • Wonderful time at Kualoa Ranch. Did the “care for the land” and UTV Tours. Both were great however the malama aina “care for the land” tour is a “must do” for a future trip. Our guide was the best.

  • Such an amazing memorable time at Kualoa Ranch. I booked the 2 hour ATV tour, as well as the Hollywood Movie Site Tour, and the Malama Aina tour. They were all spectacular. All the tour guides were super amazing and extremely knowledgeable. The entire place is picture-perfect. I will definitely be booking with them again if I am ever in Oahu again.
